You can't self aware your way out of it
Self awareness isn't enough.
You can be fully aware of your patterns and still follow them every time. You can see the self sabotage coming, and feel a sense of resignation that might feel like acceptance that this is the way you are. It's another brick you can add to the foundation that you are this type of person, no matter what, so what's the point in changing anything?
Or maybe, because you can explain why you did what you did, or why your thoughts are the way they are, you don't need to feel any type of way about it, because you can explain it away with Logic and Reason. Now you have awareness, you won't replay these patterns because you understand them now, and can logic yourself out of it.
While these may work temporarily, or for some people (some people find CBT effective after all), for a lot of people, it's just not enough.
