Gigs & Internships
NPR has opened up its internships for fall, and there are a number of science-related ones! Definitely apply, but bc I know people not from journalism read this newsletter: You will be one of literally hundreds if not thousands of applicants for any given NPR internship. Adjust expectations accordingly, make your cover letter fierce!
The Bellingham Herald is looking for a climate change reporter with the ability to take pictures and video, when needed.
Cool job - WashPo is looking for global climate correspondents who can write and do multimedia.
KBR (a company that contracts for NASA a lot) is seeking a graphics expert to join them in LA to work on communications stuff.
Lawerence Livermore is looking for a magazine editor, though honestly it looks a lot like a standard comms specialist with a print product tossed in.
Good at data viz and UX? The Kaiser Family Foundation is looking for a web developer.
Kansas City NPR (KCUR) is hiring a health reporter. Extremely cool - but I love Kansas City and the people at KCUR, so I'm biased.
Hu$tle Tips
Input Mag is looking for tech pitches.
Oh, also, audio producers: Did you know you can almost always freelance for the local NPR station? Yeah, even KCUR is very friendly towards freelancers.

Growing your vocabulary: FOIA Request.
A FOIA (foy-ya) request is a thing you file when a public official is refusing to give you XYZ information. You can FOIA anything. You can FOIA their calendar. You can FOIA receipts. You can FOIA meeting minutes. It can be a little tricky if it's your first go-round, so I like to share the pro's how-to when it comes to FOIA filing.
What Got Me Through Last Week
My new happy place: Cleaning my house and listening to Normal Gossip. Highly recommend the Scrubby Daddy/Mommy/Parental Unit product if you haven't experienced it. I also got three new plants: (Fig) Newton, Ferni, and RoseMarie Curie.
