Building your vocabulary:
Verticle. A "category" on a news website. Always make sure your pitches can easily fall into one of these, for whoever you're trying to write/produce for. For Example: "Hi Editor, Have you ever wondered about the connection between apple orchards and morel mushrooms? I'm a mycologist who has extensive research experience around fungi. I'd like to write 500 words on why morels are often found in apple orchards for your "forager" verticle. My current rate is .35/word, but willing to negotiate based on your budget."
