Village Bounty

Kerala ยท street

A jackfruit tree heavy with fruit beside a thatched hut โ€” rural Kerala in a single frame. The tree provides shade, timber, and food; the hut provides everything else.

The Kerala countryside is lush in a way that borders on excessive. Every compound has coconut palms, banana plants, mango trees, and almost always a jackfruit tree โ€” the world's largest tree-borne fruit, hanging from the trunk and branches in great green clusters that can weigh thirty kilograms each.

This hut was in a village inland from the coast, and the jackfruit tree beside it was bearing so heavily that the branches were bowed under the weight. The thatch roof of the hut was dark with age and rain, and the contrast between the bright green fruit and the weathered brown thatch told a story of abundance and simplicity. A woman was sweeping the yard with a coconut-frond broom, moving around the fallen jackfruit leaves with the practiced efficiency of someone who has done this every morning for decades. Rural India is not picturesque in the calendar sense. It's beautiful in the functional sense โ€” everything in its place, everything used.
