River Repose
Sundarbans, West Bengal ยท street
A wooden boat rests on a glassy river in the Sundarbans, its hull reflected perfectly in the still water. In the mangrove delta, the boat is not a vehicle โ it's a way of life.
In the Sundarbans, there are no roads. Everything moves by water โ people, goods, livestock, the mail. The country boats are built from local timber, flat-bottomed for the shallow channels, and painted in colours that serve as identification in the fog and rain that frequently blankets the delta.
This boat was moored in a tidal channel at slack water, when the current pauses between the incoming and outgoing tides. The water was so still that the reflection was perfect โ a symmetry broken only by a slight ripple from a fish surfacing nearby. The mangroves on either bank formed a green tunnel over the channel, and the light was filtered and soft. I sat on a bank and watched the boat for half an hour, during which nothing happened. Nothing needed to. The Sundarbans teach you that stillness is not emptiness. It's the interval between events, and it has its own value.
