Topi on a Termite Mound

Topi on a Termite Mound

Maasai Mara, Kenya · nature

Three topi share a small rise of dry earth on the open grass, alert in the way savanna antelope are always alert. A composition arranged by a herd's quiet logic.

Topi are the lookouts of the Mara. Where other antelope graze with their heads down, topi will often stand on a small rise — usually a flattened termite mound — and watch the surrounding plain for an hour at a stretch. They have excellent vision and a clear hierarchy about who gets the highest spot.

These three had settled on a single mound the size of a small car, all facing slightly different directions. The biggest one held the high ground. No one was moving. The grass around them ran flat to the horizon line, broken only by a few distant trees. I shot at a low angle to let the figures stand against the sky and waited for the alpha to lift his head fully. He did, briefly. The other two never moved. That's how these herds work — one watches, the others trust.
