A painted stork stalks across green grass, its long yellow beak angled to the ground. The bird that walks like it has somewhere very specific to be.
Painted storks earn their name twice over — the pink wash on the wing tips, the orange head, the long bicoloured beak that looks like a designed object. They're tall enough that they're easy to spot in the open and patient enough that they'll let you watch them for as long as you want, as long as you're not approaching.
This one was working the edge of a pond that had spilled out into the grass during the rains. The beak was always angled down, sweeping side to side like a metal detector, ready to clamp shut the second it touched anything that moved. Painted storks fish entirely by feel — they don't look at the water, they listen to it. I shot a frame, then stepped back. The bird didn't notice. Of course it didn't notice. It was busy.
