Tidesmoothed Stones

Tidesmoothed Stones

Coastal India · landscape

A close-packed bed of granite pebbles, each one smoothed and rounded by the sea. A record of patience in stone.

Granite is hard enough that geological time is what shapes it. Every smooth-rounded edge on a pebble like this represents a few hundred thousand sea-rolls, give or take. The pebble doesn't notice. The sea doesn't notice. You're the only thing in the equation that's in a hurry.

I walked past a long bank of these on a beach where the sand had run out and the stones had taken over. The colours were extraordinary up close — pinks, greys, mottled blacks, occasional cinnamons. I crouched, held the camera straight down, took one frame, and stood back up. The composition was already perfect. The sea had been arranging it for longer than I could imagine.
