The Jar in the Tree

The Jar in the Tree

India · nature

A glass jar hangs from a slender branch as the sky goes peach at dusk. Someone, somewhere, decided to make a small lantern out of nothing.

There's a kind of garden ornament that doesn't get sold in shops — a mason jar with a length of wire, hung from a low branch, waiting for a candle. You see them sometimes in courtyards or terraces, usually one or two on each tree, almost always at exactly the height where you'd notice them on the way past. They're a private kindness people give the dusk.

This jar was hanging from a schefflera, its leaves splayed like open hands against the sky. The branches drew clean dark lines through the soft peach background. I shot it straight on, framing the jar between two clusters of leaves. Whoever had hung it would light it when it got dark — but for that quiet half-hour before, it was just an empty jar in a tree, and somehow that was enough.
