A single rose held above a Rajasthani hill-town lake, both rendered in black and white. The flower in close focus, the town and water arranged behind it.
Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan — a small town of about thirty thousand people perched at 1,200 metres in the Aravallis, built around a sacred lake called Nakki. The town is famous for its Dilwara Jain temples, its summer migrations of Gujarati families, and the rose gardens that line the lake.
This particular rose was leaning over a stone parapet at the edge of the lake, with the town and its boats spread out behind it. I converted to monochrome because the colour version had a kind of postcard quality I wasn't interested in — the deep red of the rose pulling all the attention, the rest of the frame reduced to background. In black and white, the rose becomes a shape rather than a colour, and the town behind has room to register: the cluster of white buildings, the line of moored boats, the dark hills above. It's a more even picture, and a quieter one. The colour was lovely. The monochrome was honest.
