A small tourist boat drifts past a raft of water lilies on a wide, still lake. The far shore is just a line of green trees and pale sky.
Indian lakes in the dry season often grow these enormous mats of water lilies — Nymphaea species, mostly white and pink — that float on the surface like green-and-pale-yellow puzzles. The lilies prefer shallow, still water, so they congregate in the bays and along the bank, leaving the main channel open for boats to pass through.
This lake was somewhere south of the plains, in country flat enough that the trees on the far shore were just a single horizontal stroke. The boat was tied at the edge of the lily mat, the boatman waiting for the next group of passengers. There's a stillness particular to mid-morning on a flat lake — the wind hasn't picked up yet, the heat hasn't kicked in, and the surface holds everything in suspension. I framed the shot to let the lilies fill the bottom third and the open water do the rest. The lilies don't move. The boat barely does. The picture is mostly about a kind of patient waiting.
