Ridges in Haze

A line of distant Himalayan ridges fades into haze behind two corners of a hill-station rooftop. A frame that is almost entirely sky and atmosphere.

Hill stations in the Indian Himalayas are built along ridges, with the buildings stacked tight against the slope and the views falling away in steep gradients on the open side. The architecture is unremarkable in the conventional sense — corrugated roofs, painted gables, modest concrete — but the way the houses meet the sky is often unforgettable.

I was on a guesthouse terrace when I took this. Two roof corners come in from the left and right, the closer one in deeper colour, the further one already softening. Between them, the haze takes over: layer after layer of ridge, each one a slightly lighter shade of grey-blue, dissolving entirely into the sky long before the horizon. There is a small sapling in the bottom centre, leaves catching the light, like a punctuation mark at the bottom of a sentence about distance. This kind of landscape requires very little intervention. You just need to leave room for the air to do its work.
