A pink powder-puff flower — a sphere of fine pink-orange stamens with no visible petals, lit from above so the threads glow at their tips.
Calliandra haematocephala — powder puff, sometimes red powder puff — is one of the more extravagant flowers in tropical gardens. The flower has almost no petals to speak of; the whole show is made of stamens — hundreds of fine pink-orange threads radiating out from a single point at the centre — that catch the light like glass fibre. In the early morning, when the dew is still on them, they look almost lit from inside.
This one had opened on a low bush in a courtyard garden, low enough that I could shoot it from above at very close range. The light was coming through from behind, making the stamens translucent at their tips and pulling out the faint colour gradient — deeper pink at the base, paler orange at the ends. There is a category of flower that exists almost entirely to disprove the idea that flowers have a standard shape. Calliandra is one of those flowers. It is mostly empty space held together by colour.
