Moon Through Cloud

A small pale moon hangs in a sky thick with cloud, the dark silhouette of low hills holding the bottom edge of the frame. Almost nothing else.

Some nights the moon is so muffled by atmosphere that it stops being the bright object you usually photograph and becomes a small soft disc, no brighter than a faraway streetlight. Those nights are the ones I prefer. The moon at full brightness tends to dominate any frame it's in; the moon at half-power lets the rest of the sky into the picture, and the rest of the sky usually has something to say.

This was one of those nights. A low cloud bank had drifted across the moon and held there, thinning slightly where the moon sat but not breaking. The hills below were already in deep shadow. I shot at long exposure to bring up the dark and accepted some grain in the sky. The picture is mostly atmosphere — fog, cloud, the suggestion of light somewhere behind it all — and a single low ridge holding the bottom. There is a kind of night photograph that asks for very little and rewards looking at slowly. This is that kind.
