Orange Hibiscus

A single hibiscus bloom — orange petals with a deep red throat, the column of stamens reaching out as if presenting itself. Ten centimetres of architecture.

Hibiscus is the workhorse of Indian gardens. Common, hardy, indifferent to neglect, blooming nearly all year — and yet up close, every flower is a small piece of botanical theatre. Five petals, a long staminal column tipped with a five-armed stigma, a flare of darker pigment at the throat to direct insects toward the pollen.

This variety — the orange one with the red eye — is one of the most planted in Maharashtra. I shot it on a morning in April when the bush was at its peak, choosing a single bloom that had just opened and was facing the sun. The light came in from the side and lit the petals from within so that the orange had the depth of a painted glaze. Hibiscus blooms last a single day. By tomorrow this exact flower will be on the ground, and another one will have replaced it on the bush. The plant doesn't seem to mind.
