A single Kalanchoe bud beginning to open — the slender green tube giving way to two folded red petals, the tightly-packed succulent rosette behind out of focus.
Kalanchoes are the small, undemanding succulents that show up on every Indian windowsill — thick paddle-shaped leaves in dusty green or with bronze edges, the whole plant about a hand-span wide, and once a year or so a flowering stem rises out of the rosette holding a cluster of slender tubular flowers. The buds open one at a time, slowly, over the course of a week, which means there is always a stage to photograph.
This one was right at the beginning. The green tube of the calyx had begun to split, and the two red petals had just emerged, held tightly against each other like hands not yet ready to let go. The rosette of leaves behind was out of focus — soft greens and bronzes blurring into a low contrast wash — leaving the bud as the only thing in sharp focus in the frame. There is a particular pleasure in catching a flower at its bud stage; the colour is at its most concentrated, the form at its most economical. By tomorrow this bloom will be open and slightly diluted. Today it was promise.
