A white tethered hot-air balloon hangs above a stand of poplars at the edge of a Himalayan hill town, the slope behind dark with pine.
Tethered hot-air balloons turn up in the strangest places. They appear in the parking lots of resort hotels in Manali, on the lawns of small heritage estates in Coorg, in the field next to a tea garden in the Nilgiris. Twenty minutes up, twenty minutes down, two hundred rupees a person. The basket is rarely more than four people deep. By the time the balloon is at altitude, it has stopped looking like an attraction and started looking like the surreal floating object it actually is.
This one was hovering above the trees at the edge of a small hill town. The poplars at the foreground had not yet leafed out for the year; the pine slope behind was a uniform dark green. The basket was just visible, with maybe two people inside. The balloon itself was a clean white globe — no logos, no resort sponsorship, just a sphere of envelope-tight fabric and the propane burner running quietly underneath. I shot wide, leaving most of the frame as sky. There is a small category of landscape that depends on someone else doing something unusual at exactly the right time. This was one of those moments.
