The first flush of new leaves on a tropical plant — bronze at the tips, fading through copper to fresh green at the base. Photosynthesis catching up with the light.
Many tropical plants put out new leaves in shades of red, copper or bronze before they go green. The reason is biological — anthocyanin pigments protect the soft new tissue from UV while the chloroplasts are still forming — but the visual result is that a healthy tree in spring or after the rains looks like it's been hung with small lanterns.
This one was on a vine or climbing shrub at the edge of someone's garden. The largest new leaf at the top still held its full bronze colour, the next one was already shading to copper, and the one below had reached pale green. You could read the timeline of the past two weeks just by looking at the gradient. I shot in close, against a darker shadow behind, so the leaves themselves became almost luminous. The line between botany and architecture is thin. Sometimes a leaf is a building.
