Bare branches against a pale sky — the geometry of a tree without its leaves, photographed in black and white because nothing else was needed.

Trees in winter or in the dry season let you see how they actually grow. The leaves are a distraction. Without them you can read the whole strategy of the canopy — every fork was a choice, every branch is the result of some calculation about light and weight and what the wind tends to do.

This tree had dropped its leaves and was waiting for the rains. I lay flat on my back in the dust beneath it and shot straight up. The branches drew dark lines across a pale sky. The frame became almost graphic — a study in fork and counter-fork, weight and balance. I converted to black and white in the edit because the colour version was just shades of brown anyway. Sometimes a photograph wants to be a drawing.
