Acacia at Dusk

Acacia at Dusk

Maasai Mara, Kenya · landscape

A flat-topped acacia stands against a pink and lilac sky as the savanna goes quiet. The most photographed shape in East Africa, photographed anyway.

Acacia trees are so visually associated with East African savanna that they've become a kind of visual shorthand. Every documentary, every safari brochure, every coffee-table book — the acacia at sunset shows up somewhere. There's a reason. The shape is genuinely beautiful. Flat-topped, sparse-foliaged, perfectly silhouetted against a horizon that's almost always doing something interesting in light.

This tree was at the edge of a clearing where we'd stopped for the last fifteen minutes of light. The sky went pink, then lilac, then a strange wash of green-grey that the camera couldn't quite hold. I shot the tree against the warmest part of the sky and was honest with myself: this is a cliché, and it's also a very good photograph. Sometimes clichés are clichés because the underlying thing is correct.
