VIX above 30 is not a sell signal

It's a thermometer, not a crystal ball. Here's how to read it right.

The rule sounds bulletproof: VIX above 30, you sell. VIX under 15, you buy.

Backtest it and it bleeds. Selling every VIX spike would have dumped your stocks at the exact bottom in March 2020.

Here's the core confusion. People treat VIX as a forecast. It was never built to be one. When the S&P drops hard, VIX rises in the same session — it reacts, it doesn't predict. Asking VIX to time the market is like asking a thermometer to forecast tomorrow's weather. It tells you it's hot right now. Nothing more.

So what is VIX? A priced expected move. A VIX of 20 means the options market is pricing roughly a 20% annualized move. Divide by about 15.9 (the square root of 252 trading days) and you get a daily band near 1.26% — about plus or minus $6.30 on a $500 SPY. It's not a mood ring. It's a width.

But the width is only half the picture. The other half is realized volatility — how much the market actually moved. Implied is what you're sold. Realized is what shows up. Most of the time implied runs hotter. That gap is the variance risk premium, and it's a value signal, not a direction signal.

VIX 30 while the market realizes 18? Options are expensive. VIX 13 while it realizes 20? Options are cheap, and the crowd is underpricing risk that's already here.

What a disciplined trader does: never trade the VIX level alone. Pull up realized vol next to it and ask which one is overpriced. Convert the level into a daily expected move so you can size stops and strikes around it. Direction is a separate question entirely.

The handle to keep: VIX is a thermometer, not a crystal ball. Your edge isn't the reading — it's comparing the reading to what's actually happening.

This is educational commentary, not personalized financial advice — test the framework, don't copy a trade.
