A 70% win rate can still take you to zero

The number the win-rate sellers never show you.

A strategy wins 70% of its trades. Seven green for every three red. And it can still drain a $10,000 account to zero.

Not because the edge was fake. Because of one number nobody puts on the screenshot.

The core insight: a win rate is only half of a trade. The other half is how much you win versus how much you lose. Sell a spread, collect $150 when you're right, lose $300 when you're wrong, win 70% of the time — that's a genuinely positive edge, about $30 a trade. Profitable.

And it can still go to zero. Here's why.

A win rate tells you the long-run average. It says nothing about the order wins and losses arrive in. Over 200 trades, a run of five straight losses isn't a fluke — it's expected. The only question is whether your account is still standing when it hits.

Take two traders, same strategy, same trades in the same order:

  • Trader A risks 2% per trade. After five straight losses: down ~10%. Recoverable.
  • Trader B risks 25% per trade. After the same five losses: down more than 75%.

And recovering 75% doesn't take 75% — it takes 300%. Losses and gains aren't mirror images. Every percent you drop makes the climb back steeper than the fall.

What a disciplined trader does: run the streak before chasing the win rate. Multiply your worst realistic run of losses by your bet size, and check the account survives it. For most retail traders that keeps you near 1–2% of capital at risk per trade. If seven losses in a row would basically end you, you don't have an edge — you have a slot machine with a good story.

The handle to keep at the screen: a high win rate tells you how often you're right. Position size decides whether you're allowed to be wrong.

This is educational commentary, not personalized financial advice — treat every number as a worked example, not a signal to trade.
