70% right and still going broke

The number almost nobody checks — and the one division that exposes it.

A quick one this week, but it might be the most important number you never check.

Imagine a trader who's right 70% of the time. Seven greens, three reds. Feels like a winning system, right? Now put dollars on it: each winner banks $50, each loser drops $150.

Run ten trades. Seven wins = +$350. Three losses = −$450. Net −$100. Right 70% of the time and still down money. Per trade, that's −$10 of expected value, quietly leaving the account every click.

The win rate never lied. It just never mattered as much as the trader thought.

Here's the mechanism: booking a small win feels like certainty. Booking a loss feels like admitting you were wrong, so you give it room. The win rate you love and the loser size that kills you come from the same instinct — the need to be right in the moment. Willpower won't fix that. Math will.

And here's the clean line that does the fixing:

Breakeven win rate = average loss ÷ (average win + average loss)

A $50 winner and a $150 loser? 150 ÷ 200 = 75%. To just break even with three-to-one losers, you need to be right three out of four times. Our trader was right seven out of ten. That gap is the whole story.

What a disciplined trader does: pull your trading log tonight. Get two numbers — real average win, real average loss, in dollars, from actual fills. Do one division. Compare the result to your actual win rate. If you're not comfortably above the line, the strategy is negative expectancy no matter how good it feels.

And the biggest lever isn't winning more often. It's shrinking your losers. Cut a 3:1 loser to 1:1 and your required win rate falls from 75% to 50%.

This is educational commentary, not personalized financial advice — run the math on your own account before you change anything.
