Now's the time for hand-made gifts

Two ceramic tumblers made from a rich brown clay, one of them on it's side to show the base. The body curves up and out from an inset foot ring, then suddenly angles in at a gentle slope towards the rim. There are four neatly spaced rings carved near the base, and then a hand-drawn heart inlaid with white, and the words mom and dad in two different handwritings. The rims are glazed black with floating organic patches of gold.

Hi friends,

My new site is live, and perpetually under construction. Written by hand, by me. In an era of slop, it’s a pleasure to embrace craft.

There are a range of new pieces available, including:

A bottle with a flared base tinged blue-green from oxidized copper, a black-then-white swoop of bare clay on walls that slope in towards the neck, and then glossy white crackle glaze. The cracks have only blackened in very specific places – a circle near the base, a sliver along the shoulder, and around the head and rim of the bottle itself.

Bottle vase in organic sepia-like matte finish. It has a wide base that rounds back into the foot, holding it gently off the table. The walls are like a smeared-plaster, highlighted by the raku-burned toasty brown splatters. At the shoulder a darker ring, then white with subtle splashes as the form angles in to a narrow neck with a slightly flared bowl-like lip.
several sepia ‘obvara’ raku vases
An open butter bell in two pieces, the upright jar and overturned lid revealing a bell inside – now upright. On the side of the jar it says trans fats in a hand-carved slab serif inlayed withc white. The outside surfaces are a rich brown raw clay with subtle texture, while the insides are glazed in organic floating blues.
butter bells, including this one for trans fats
Angular White tumbler with a narrow cup-holder-friendly base that flares slightly in the first couple inches, and then angles out more dramatically, and slopes gently back in towards the vertical lip. A travel lid fits snug at the top.
colorful travel tumblers that fit the medium Yeti lid
Two large ceramic bowls neatly nested, with chop sticks set in shallow notches on the rim of the top bowl. The bowls have a deep foot ring that angles one at down, then back in for the bottom quarter inch which is left bare in a speckled tan clay.

If you’re looking for thoughtful gifts this fall, consider buying handmade.

I’d love to make you something special

I’ve done a number of custom pieces recently – from the ‘mom & dad’ cups at the top of the email, to special light jars, soap pumps with children’s handwriting, and more.

white porcelain jar in split view, glowing amber from the inside when turned on. From the base it flares out and up like a honey pot, and then angles back in near the top, to an opening that matches the base. The side is textured in overlapping grooved rings, and light is carved in an upright sort of slab cursive. The lid is on and also glowing from inside. There's a splatter of subtle blue wash from above.
Joanna, Jerry, and Michelle all requested round ‘honey pot’ lamps
Large round-bottom ramen bowl with a wide rim and textured walls of glassy blues on browns. There's a deep foot ring at the base and a wide shallow lid that sits into the lip - also textured, and with a ring at the top for a handle.
Jen asked for a lidded ramen bowl
A black and white bottle with a pump dispenser top with 'sope' carved on the side in a child's handwriting. The bottom is black clay, but it shifts with a hard edge slightly spiraled to white clay about two inches up.
Danyka & Sam wanted a ‘sope’ dispenser with flare

I’d love to make something for you as well. It usually takes me a month to finish a custom piece, but things can be busier around the holidays. If you’re looking for thoughtful handmade gifts – or want something custom – now’s a good time to start putting in requests.

A new shed (work in progress)

Me in striped trousers and a black-and-white t-shirt leaning against a small shed in our narrow back yard. Tomatoes are growing in front, and the shed is painted yellow, with an orange door and deep green-blue trim. It's a douch door, split top and bottom, with a small window next to it.
pottery “she’d” nearly complete

Erin and I have also been working on the back yard, which now includes a shed with a pottery wheel. That’s taken us most of the summer, but it’s almost ready to use!

People sometimes ask if it’s a “she shed”. Sure. Or I’ll sometimes refer to it as a “she/they shed”. But my phone always autocorrects to “she’d” and I like that.
