In school, we often ask students questions about what they read. But what about images? Images stimulate understanding of texts, topics, or fictional stories in all different content areas. They are effective for Multilingual Learners and mixed ability classes because you can use the same image but create leveled tasks to make sure MLs are within their Zone of Proximal Development. You can choose images based on your content area or students’ interests. Here’s a wonderful link to find interesting photos:

Here's an example:

1.    Share the image on the overhead.

2.    Create task cards that you give to MLs to answer independently or in pairs/groups. The tasks you distribute will depend on their WIDA levels.

Other ideas you’ve tried with images?

How might you adapt this in your class?
