From 2009-2019, my primary identity was “in a band with my sister.” The Doubleclicks wrote and performed nerd music and toured game stores and libraries and comic conventions around the world. We never drew a big crowd in Los Angeles, but we played in huge auditoriums in Seattle and Melbourne and for 15 very nervous Germans in a storefront in Munich.

After 2020, I got divorced, started testosterone, and stopped performing so much. Aubrey has had similar but less gender-related changes. I’ve been doing a ton of producing and it has been absolutely delightful and fulfilling. She has a dog. Actually we both have dogs. We never could have had dogs before with all that touring.

Now and again a stranger will email me from a convention or a fan blog and ask if we will perform again, and as the years go on this question scares me more and more. My voice was changing, and different! My identity doubly so. And I started distancing myself from this music—who even wrote this stuff? Why would anyone like it? We never had a big crowd in LA, and I always felt like I wasn’t good enough for this town. Our music was too simple or bad or sincere or cringe, or something.

After 2019, when we played gigs, or I did a solo gig, I was so stressed about whether I was doing the show that people wanted to see. I was very concerned about which songs folks wanted to hear and if I was disappointing them.

This February, We did a secret little band reunion in Chicago in a hotel basement. A convention invited me, and I snuck Aubrey along. I decided to call it a “Laser” concert to lower the expectations, and to only play my favorite songs. We brought along my dear friend Tony to be our emotional rock/music director/pianist/harmony king. And honestly — the Doubleclicks sound better than ever. The audience was full of humans who reminded me what I love about this music. It’s so direct and it’s honest, it’s cute but it means something.

So we’re doing it again! No more procrastinating… just believing. We’re doing it, we’re doing the songs we wanna play, and nobody has to come if they don’t want to.

And that’s it! Touring costs money and it’s hard, sorry!

I’m excited to crash my identities together and bring the Doubleclicks back. I’m excited to spend my birthday weekend in Portland, Oregon which is a delightful theme park of a city (the theme is “socialist utopia”).
