Kimmel said Trump and his allies were "desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them." That wording seems to me a clear assertion/assumption that the kid WAS "one of them." It was generally understood that way and I'm not aware that Kimmel has said otherwise.
