"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." — Aldous Huxley

Welcome to After Silence, a new newsletter from author Jeremy Eichler.

I'm a writer, critic and historian. You may know my work from my recent book Time's Echo — about music, war, and memory — which was named History Book of the Year by The Sunday Times. Or from my 18 years as chief classical music critic at The Boston Globe. However you arrived, I'm glad you're here!

This newsletter will be finding its shape as I begin two new ventures this fall, joining the faculty at Tufts University and partnering with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as its first Writer-in-Residence. Once these dispatches begin arriving, they may feature thoughts from the intersection of sound and culture, updates on new projects and new writing, conversations with authors and artists, recommendations, and more.

Whatever this newsletter becomes, I'm grateful you'll be reading — and I hope you'll share your thoughts with me along the way. To subscribe, please enter your email below. Welcome!
