April Newsletter! The FLUKE report, 100x100, and... a familiar friend??

Hey hey hey, welcome to my April newsletter! I want to start off this month’s newsletter with a big thank you to everyone who signed up for it at FLUKE last month! And of course, thanks to all of my returning readers as well! To all of my new readers, here’s where I write about stuff I’m working on, share short comics, keep you posted on upcoming events, and more!

FLUKE

drawings of Bun the bunny as various horror characters
Pictured left to right, top to bottom: Bun as Jess from Black Christmas, Bun as Sally from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Bun as Angela from Sleepaway Camp, and Bun as Elvira!

FLUKE was such a great show! I met some really awesome people, and sales-wise it was my most successful event to date! I was running an “I will draw Bun (the bunny) on the back page as the your favorite final girl or spooky lady” deal for all of the copies of Slasher Bunny I sold, and pictured above are some of the highlights from that! If you already have a copy of Slasher Bunny and are thinking, “aw man! I wish I had that in the back of my book,” feel free to bring it to me at a show and I’ll draw it for you! I love putting Bun in funny costumes and hearing about everyone’s favorite horror characters.

Speaking of Slasher Bunny…

SLASHER BUNNY: THE PAINTING!

slasher bunny: the painting next to promo flyer for CVA 100x100 2026 show

Pretty much every year, I donate a painting to the Greensboro Center for Visual Artists’ 100×100 fundraiser, and this year’s painting (pictured above) is a Slasher Bunny original! Come on out to the CVA gallery (200 N. Davie Street, Greensboro, NC) on Friday, May 1 between 6 and 9 PM if you’re interested in purchasing this painting or any of the other fantastic works of art that will be available! This year, over 120 artists signed up to donate pieces, so there’ll definitely be an awesome selection of work! All proceeds go to the Greensboro Center for Visual Artists.

I got to take some classes at the CVA when I was a kid, and it really helped stoke my interest in art. I probably don’t need to tell anyone reading this that federal and state funding for the arts is, to say the least, not really a priority. I know this is also not really a time when a lot of people have a hundred big ones lying around with which to purchase a piece of art. But, if you have the extra money and want a cool piece of art, this show is a great way to help keep one of the good things in life going.

SO HOW ABOUT INOSCULARUM

Nox and Ariadne holding hands while a bright light emanates from them

For all of my new readers, Inoscularum is a folk-fantasy romance comic I’ve been making for the past year or so! Well, I should say I’ve been making the first issue of it for the past year. I’ve actually worked on the story on and off since I was about 13 years old, and it’s changed a lot since then, but I am really pleased with what it’s become and what it is still becoming! As of the time I’m writing this, I only have 11 more pages to ink! It is pretty exhilarating to have the finish line so clearly in sight for this issue. I’m excited to hold the finished book in my hands, and I’m even more excited to break ground on book 2!

SOME OTHER STUFF!

lots of drawings of Ariadne

I’ve been making more time for doodling and other “just for fun” art. I think it helps keep my drawings in my actual comics a bit more fluid and expressive, and it’s also just nice to make drawings without any specific end goal in mind. Pictured above are a bunch of drawings of Ariadne (one of the main characters of Inoscularum) that I drew while hanging out in the yard one night. Not to toot my own horn too much, but she’s so adorable! I managed to design a character who is really fun to draw, which counts for a lot when you’re making a comic.

I’ve been scribbling a lot of little comics about what I’ve been up to lately:

comic about seeing a groundhog while out jogging
(Don’t worry you guys, I didn’t really think it was a wombat. I just needed a funny animal name to put in panel 3)

comic about taking a centipede out of my in-laws' tub
This one is about scooping a centipede out of my in-laws’ tub. People say centipede bites really hurt, and it’s a bark centipede, using a Clive Barker quote? Idk, y’all, I was pretty tired when I wrote this one.

comic about lifting heavy groceries
What can I say, when there’s a BOGO on canned goods, I’m absolutely gonna bo and I’m gonna go. And then I’m gonna have some heavy groceries. I don’t often feel like a very impressive person, but I do pride myself on my ability to pick up pretty much anything!

comic about people asking to get their photo taken at the bar
This one’s a two-pager. I mostly just thought it was funny that I got caught up in some kind of photography chain. I have trouble pacing 4-panel comics and giving them punchlines, but I got this square sketchbook and figured that’s as good a place to practice as any!

Well, that’s it for comics, which means it’s time for…

CRITTER OF THE MONTH!!

(For a fully enhanced multimedia experience, I request that you read this Critter of the Month segment while listening to this)

April’s critter of the month is the green anole!!

a green anole! a green anole!!

The green anoles who live around my house are back to hopping around, crawling around, and being generally very fun to observe. Even though they’re called green anoles, they can also turn brown, which they do for a variety of reasons. It’s pretty wild to see how quickly they can change colors! They’re diurnal, so I have seen one sleeping before… right on my lemon tree! I shared this picture in my very first newsletter, but here it is again, because it was pretty remarkable!

SONG OF THE MONTH!

Sometimes, a song will become really popular, and then it will get used in a football commercial, ie, a commercial for televised football or a commercial that plays during a televised football game. And when a song gets that football stink on it, I wind up associating the band who played the song with that football stink.

All this is to say, for about 20 years now, I have really unfairly maligned Duran Duran because I heard Hungry Like The Wolf in like, a Hardee’s commercial or something when I was a kid.

So, yeah. Sorry, Duran Duran. The song of the month is The Chauffeur! What a cool, dreamy tune!

END OF APRIL NEWSLETTER!

Well, that’s it for now. Thanks for reading! Hope you all have a great month, and don’t forget to step outside and look at the moon sometime. The next full moon is on May 1st!
