Take Housing Action In Escondido Now

This week we have two important housing-related items this week in Escondido that deserve attention:

1) Wednesday 4/1 –  City Council Agenda Item 12   A hearing and vote on the sale of City-owned land to KB Home for a market-rate development.

Why this matters:
This is part of a continued pattern of developments approved by the City with no affordable housing units, at a time when the City is under scrutiny for being out of compliance with the State Housing Element, which could expose it to legal action and underscores the lack of progress on expanding affordable housing locally.  Read this article for context:  Voice of San Diego - North County Reports Not Many Homes for the Low Income

2) Friday 4/3 – Deadline for Public Comment on Expiring HOME Funds
This is the last day to submit comments on how the City plans to use HOME funds from 2017–2018 that must be spent this year.

Why this matters:

  • The City has been aware of these expiring funds since at least late 2025

  • Many residents have advocated for using them for rental subsidies to help people stay housed

  • Instead, the City is now indicating it may be too late to use those funds in this way

This is a critical moment to make your voice part of the public record.

Why your participation matters
Public comments are one of the few ways residents can directly influence decisions. Even brief comments help show that the community is paying attention and cares how these funds are used.
