Public Chance to Weigh-in on Ice Rink Proposal, June 9 and 13

There is a proposal to locate a large ice sports on public land in Kit Carson Park. The city is asking for public input on this project. The public can weigh-in on the project itself and whether this is the right location for a commercial venture.

As a commercial venture please weigh-in if you think it is an appropriate use of existing and scarce public parkland. The proposed Ice Rink complex threatens to privatize a large portion of the public Kit Carson Park and usurp recreational uses already in place there. Creation and maintenance of ice in our desert heat and the inevitable impacts to climate change is also of concern. If the city moves forward it could consider directing the project to a different location more consistent with commercial uses.

The announcement from the city below soliciting input at two meetings on June 9 and 13 and links for written comments is below.

The City of Escondido is currently exploring the feasibility of developing a community ice facility to be built in Kit Carson Park by The Rinks Foundation. This may impact how programmed sports activities are organized at some of our parks, including Ryan Park.

We invite you and your players, and their families, to attend one of two upcoming community meetings to learn more about the proposed project, ask questions, and provide feedback:

  • Tuesday, June 9
    6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
East Valley Community Center – 2245 E. Valley Parkway

  • Saturday, June 13
    9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Mitchell Room, City Hall – 201 N. Broadway

These meetings are an opportunity to hear directly from City staff and project representatives about what’s being considered, how it may affect park use, and what options are being explored moving forward.

No RSVP is needed to attend an in person meeting.
