Important: Attend Esco Council Meeting, Support Prop 50

This Wednesday, Sept. 17, 5 PM, Escondido City Hall, 201 N. Broadway. The Council will consider a NO position on Prop 50- the Stop Election Rigging Act. Since the Mayor is requesting a NO vote, please file a speaker card Opposed to that recommendation. Let the Council know you Support YES on Prop 50. Please attend and/or file a comment here. It is item 9 on the agenda.

Prop 50 draws fair maps that represent California's diverse communities and ensure our voices aren't silenced by partisan gerrymandering in other states. California leads the nation in protecting voting rights and fair elections. When other states try to silence our voices and rig the system, we must respond decisively.

●       A Principled Stand for Fair Play: This proposition is about ensuring a level playing field. When other states use gerrymandering to gain an unfair advantage, it violates the principles of honest competition and fair representation that are foundational to our republic. A "yes" vote is a vote for principled governance.

●       State Sovereignty and Self-Defense: The federalist system is built on states having power. When another state's actions threaten to diminish California's voice in Washington, D.C., our state has a responsibility to protect its own interests and its citizens' representation. This is about California standing up for itself.

●       Temporary and Targeted Action: This is not a permanent change to California's independent redistricting process. The measure is designed to be a temporary solution that expires after the 2030 Census. It is a one-time surgical strike to address a specific, external threat to our state's representation.

●       Restoring Balance: The current maps have been criticized for creating an imbalance of power in the federal government. This measure is a way to re-establish a more balanced distribution of power by ensuring California’s congressional delegation accurately reflects its population and political diversity.

Last, any short-term impacts to Escondido will be offset by increased support in Congress for local government. If nothing changes in Congress, impacts to local communities by federal over-reach will worsen causing more negative impacts to our economy, justice, and health and safety.

Also, urge Council to Support SB627- Prohibition on Masking for Federal Immigration agents.

There will also be an opportunity on Public Comment to urge the Council members to urge the Governor to sign the ‘No Secret Police Act SB 627 which essentially prohibits a peace officer, any officer/agent of a federal law enforcement agency, any person acting on behalf of a federal law enforcement agency, from wearing a facial covering in the performance of their duties. There are significant exemptions listed in the bill.

Many cities are stepping up against the excesses of ICE in our communities. Check these out.
