Events
- Tuesday, May 11, 2021, 5:30 PM: San Diego County Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board Meeting via teleconference. See Meeting Agenda. Remote teleconference will be at BlueJean Platform. Public comments can be made at Register Comments or Request to Speak.
- Wednesday, May 12, 2021, 5:00 PM: Escondido City Council Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. ***Note: this meeting will be in-person though public comment can still be made online.*** Agenda includes Item #12 on Homeless Street Outreach and Item #15B on a preliminary budget for 2021/2022. Live broadcast of the meeting will be at escondido.org here. Public comments may be made via Public Comment Form.
- Thursday, May 13, 2021, 2:00 PM: Escondido Library Board of Trustees Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. ***Note: this meeting will be in-person though public comment can still be made online.*** Agenda includes Item #2 on patron concern over appearance of library collection and Item #4 on the library annual report. Re-Imagining Public Safety
- Read-up on Opinion: We knew Steve Olson. His death at the hands of Escondido Police shows just how broken the system is.
- Watch Virtually or Attend Escondido City Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, 6:00 PM to hear the City’s plan for the 2021/2022 budget under Item Item #15B.
- Contact the Escondido City Council and ask them to increase funding to community-based and non-law-enforcement crisis response and homelessness outreach programs similar to what are being established in San Diego County. Police Accountability
- Contact the Escondido City Council and express support for establishment of citizen review boards to investigate complaints against law enforcement officers as recommended by a 2015/2016 Grand Jury Report from San Diego County Civil Grand Jury. The City Council discussed the topic last October, but there have been no updates since then. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support SB-2 to create a decertification process for peace officers. Senator Jones voted no on SB-2 in its 2nd hearing on April 27, 2021. See SB-2 Fact Sheet and Police Decertification Bill Moves Forward (scroll down).
Voting Reforms
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and express support for H.R.1/S.1 to strengthen our democracy. Senators Feinstein and Padilla are co-sponsors of S.1. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.1, but the House passed the bill with a 220-210 vote. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support AB-37 to extend vote by mail to all elections in California.
