Welcome to Escondido Indivisible’s weekly action plan for July 12, 2021! California Gubernatorial Recall Election will be on September 14, 2021 (65 days from now). Check your voter registration, request Vote-By-Mail ballot if you’re not a permanent mail ballot voter (ballots will not be automatically mailed to all voters but only to permanent mail ballot voters or those who requested it) or register to vote. - Monday, July 12, 2021, 5:00 PM: Escondido Independent Redistricting Commission Workshop via Zoom and at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. No meeting agenda has been posted as of July 11th but topics may include redistricting basics, process and timeline.
- Tuesday, July 13, 2021, 9:00 AM: San Diego County Board of Supervisors Regular Meeting at Board Of Supervisors North Chamber Room 310, 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 402, San Diego, CA 92101. Agenda includes Item #5, 7-8 on COVID-19 Response Update, Funding & Spending. Live broadcast of the meeting will be at sandiegocounty.gov here. - Wednesday, July 14, 2021, 5:00 PM: Escondido City Council Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. - Thursday, July 15, 1:00 PM: Escondido Library Board of Trustees Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. Future Events
- Thursday, July 22, 2021, 2:00 PM PDT: As American as Apple Pie... and Rice and Beans: a Rally at Representative Issa’s San Marcos’ Office, 570 Rancheros Dr, San Marcos, CA 92069-2911 to demand a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants, and deliver a plate of apple pie, and rice, and beans.
Voting Rights
- Read-up on Protesters gathered outside Senator Feinstein Office, in hopes of ending the filibuster.
- Contact Representative Issa, Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and urge them to pass legislation to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act of 1965 such as H.R.1/S.1. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.1. See Deadline For Democracy.
- Contact State Senator Jones and ask him to support AB-37 to extend vote by mail to all elections in California. AB-37 passed the Assembly 59 to 16. Assemblymember Waldron voted no against extending vote by mail and making voting more accessible.
Police Accountability
- Read-up on Sheriff's Department investigating Vista jail death: “...the sixth person to die in the San Diego County jail system this year” and from last week: State auditor to investigate deaths at San Diego County jails.
- Contact Assemblymember Waldron and ask her to vote yes on SB-2 to create a decertification process for peace officers. SB-2 passed the Senate 26-9. Senator Jones voted no to holding police accountable for misconduct or criminal conviction four times during the three hearings and on the Senate floor. COVID-19 & Economic Inequality
- Read-up on Restaurant workers across North Carolina say there’s no labor shortage. It’s a ‘wage shortage.’
- Read-up on Virus Cases Start To Rise Again, Especially Where Vaccination Rates Lag (San Diego County is identified as a Hot Spot), Vaccines ‘outpaced by variants’, WHO warns, as Delta now in 98 countries and Global COVID-19 deaths hit 4 million amid rush to vaccinate.
- Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to push for legislation that pays for time off for workers to get a COVID-19 vaccine shot and recover from vaccine side effects, for example, to lower the barriers for vaccine access. See Unvaccinated workers are concerned about missing work because of vaccine side effects and They Haven’t Gotten a Covid Vaccine Yet. But They Aren’t ‘Hesitant’ Either.
- Contact Representative Issa, Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and ask them to pass legislation such as S. 53/H.R. 603 to raise the federal minimum wage to $15. Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla are co-sponsors of S.53. See Raise the Federal Minimum Wage to $15.
