Welcome to Escondido Indivisible’s weekly action plan for August 8, 2022! The General Election will be Tuesday, November 8, 2022 and will include 7 state ballot measures along with Escondido Municipal Election for Mayor, City Council Seat #1 and #2 and a ¾ cent sales tax measure. Check your voter registration and register to vote if you’re eligible to vote.
Events
- Wednesday, August 10, 2022, 5:00 PM: Escondido City Council Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. Agenda includes an Clean Energy Alliance Update Presentation, Item #10 on a ballot measure re: treasurer compensation & being appointed vs. elected and Item #11 on a city council term limit ballot measure. - Thursday, August 11, 2022, 2:00 PM: Escondido Library Board of Trustees Meeting at City Hall Council Chambers, 201 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. No agenda posted Bill Text - AB-2343 Board of State and Community Corrections.as of August 7th. Live broadcast of the meeting will be at escondido.org here. - Thursday, August 11, 2022, 6:30 - 8:00 PM: 2022 Escondido General Plan Amendment At-Large Community Workshops to “discuss the update to the community protection chapter and new environmental justice chapter” at Escondido Public Library, Turrentine Room, 239 S Kalmia St, Escondido, CA 92025.
Homelessness
- Read-up on Illegal Commune in Foreclosed Escondido Home Evicted, Residents Now Homeless. Quote: “There’s a big misconception or lack of understanding from people in the community who think if someone is homeless and wants to get help, they could just agree to go to a shelter [...] there are only 99 brick-and-mortar shelter beds for more than 1,400 people experiencing homelessness in one night in North San Diego County” and “Mushayev added that she and other advocates are planning to speak out during the public comment portion of Escondido’s City Council meeting on Aug. 10.”
- Comment to the Escondido City Council to support homeless services such as a creation of a Safe Parking Program similar to Encinitas and Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement similar to La Mesa along with an expansion & more collaboration with San Diego County Mobile Crisis Response Teams.
Prison Reforms
- Read-up on Daughter of man who died in jail says deputies mistook her dad's dementia for drug abuse and San Diegans affected by jail deaths demand change.
- Contact State Senator Jones and ask him to support the Saving Lives in Custody Act, AB-2343, to “providing inmates with additional health services, mental health support, and increased accountability in an effort to reduce deaths in custody”. Note that Assemblymember Waldron voted no on AB-2343 but the bill passed the Assembly.
Reproductive Rights
- Read-up on Kansas Votes to Preserve Abortion Rights Protections in Its Constitution and Indiana Passes Near-Total Abortion Ban Post-Roe.
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and ask them to pass legislation such as H.R.8373 to “codify access to contraception into federal law”. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.8373 (and had previously praised the overturn of Roe vs. Wade and also voted against codifying abortion rights) but H.R.8373 passed the House.
