Events
- Monday, April 26, 2021, 6:00 PM: Legal Representation for All Forum via Zoom: “hear from members of our community who have been impacted by deportation/removal proceedings -- and what we can do to ensure they have legal representation.”
Police Accountability
- Read-up on Escondido Police Shoot, Kill Man With ‘Metal Pole’ and Escondido Police investigating after an officer-involved shooting leaves a man dead.
- Read-up on We Are Fighting for a World Where Ma’Khia Bryant Would Have Lived, 1 verdict, then 6 police killings across America in 24 hours and Throughout Trial Over George Floyd’s Death, Killings by Police Mount.
- Contact the Escondido City Council and express support for establishment of citizen review boards to investigate complaints against law enforcement officers as recommended by a 2015/2016 Grand Jury Report from San Diego County Civil Grand Jury. The City Council discussed the topic last October, but there have been no updates since then. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support SB-2 to create a decertification process for peace officers. A 2nd hearing is set for April 27, 2021. SB-2 is set for a April 27th hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee where Senator Jones is a member. Gun Violence
- Read-up on Five people shot in Louisiana incident; 3rd U.S. multiple shooting in one day.
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and express support for H.R.8/S.529 and H.R.1446 to expand background checks for gun purchases. Senators Feinstein and Padilla are co-sponsors of S.529. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.8 & HR.1446 but both bills passed the House. Voting Reforms
- Read-up on Inside the Democratic strategy to expand voting rights state by state.
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and express support for H.R.1/S.1 to strengthen our democracy. Senators Feinstein and Padilla are co-sponsors of S.1. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.1, but the House passed the bill with a 220-210 vote. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support AB-37 to extend vote by mail to all elections in California.
