Events
- Tuesday, April 13, 2021, 5:30 PM: San Diego County Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board Meeting via teleconference. Remote teleconference will be at BlueJean Platform. Public comments can be made at Register Comments or Request to Speak.
Voting Reforms
- Read-up on Missouri's Deep Partisan Divide Over Who Has Access To Voting Polls.
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and ask them to support H.R.1/S.1 to strengthen our democracy. Note that Representative Issa voted no on H.R.1, but the House passed the bill with a 220-210 vote. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support AB-37 to extend vote by mail to all elections in California.
Immigration
- Read-up on What’s Really Happening at the Border? and Asylum seekers at San Diego border ask Biden for answers amid inconsistent policies.
- Contact Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla and ask them to pass H.R.6 which provides “permanent legal protections and a pathway to citizenship for DACA and TPS recipients”. Rep. Issa voted no, but the bill passed the house 228-197. See Protect Dreamers and TPS Recipients with the Dream and Promise Act.
Police Reforms
- Read-up on The Strong Arm of the Law; San Diego officers, deputies turn to force more often when minorities are involved and Lawsuits prompt questions about civilian oversight of San Diego Sheriff's Department.
- Contact the Escondido City Council and express support for establishment of citizen review boards to investigate complaints against law enforcement officers as recommended by a 2015/2016 Grand Jury Report from San Diego County Civil Grand Jury. The City Council discussed the topic last October, but there have been no updates since then. - Contact Assemblymember Waldron and State Senator Jones and ask them to support SB-2 to create a decertification process for peace officers. Its 1st committee hearing is scheduled on April 13, 2021 with the Senate Public Safety Committee.

COVID-19 Response

Note that the Donovan State Prison is in Otay Mesa in SDC.
- Contact Supervisor Lawson-Remer and express concerns about the continuing COVID-19 outbreaks in Donovan State Prison. Ask her to call on Governor Newsom to increase vaccinations at prisons and call for investigations into the outbreaks.
- Note in SDC, we’re at 5.8 case rate and 19 community outbreaks, but we’re still seeing 1,723 new cases and 42 deaths in a 7-day period. See also KPBS Trigger Tracker.
