Did You Know?
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a South American plant that was first cultivated and consumed by indigenous Guaraní and Tupi communities centuries ago in the area now known as Paraguay. Nowadays, it's consumed regularly across the continent and, increasingly, worldwide.
Mate (pronounced with 2 syllables) comes from an entirely different plant than tea (Camellia sinensis) or rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) and therefore contains a different phytochemical makeup with different effects on the body than either tea or rooibos. It does contain caffeine (also called mateine) and is therefore a stimulant, though the concentration differs from the caffeine in tea or coffee.
Traditionally, yerba mate is drunk in a gourd-shaped vessel through a metal filter straw. However, it can also be steeped in the same way as other loose-leaf infusions. Check out our roasted mate, green mate with lemon pieces, or some Discover Teas house blends that feature yerba mate to try for yourself!

Hispanic & Latine American Heritage Month is from September 15th–October 15th, and 20% of all retail sales (not including tax and shipping) during that time will be donated to Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center and Ayuda.
If you're not able to donate at this time but would still like to support your local Hispanic & Latine family, friends, and neighbors during this time where our diverse communities are being endangered by state-sponsored racial profiling and detention regardless of immigration status,
check out Unidos US' Know Your Rights & Immigration Rapid Response Resource Guide.
September Action Hour: Friday, September 26th, 8:00pm Eastern!
Since March, I've been hosting an Action Hour as part of the completely optional "Take a Stand, Make a Plan" incentive program, to encourage protecting human rights and building stronger communities. See the program information for how you can receive a $25 Discover Teas gift card code if you participate, even if you can't make it to this month's Action Hour.
You are always welcome to join Action Hour, even if you don't have any specific plans for that time. It's a great space to brainstorm ideas, share resources, think about different groups we can reach out to, and come up with helpful scripts or schedules that can lessen the cognitive and emotional load of these tasks. It can also be an opportunity to discuss strategies for managing the deluge of dire news in a productive fashion while still staying informed and compassionate, ways to help keep each other safe, and how to identify or recover from burnout, so we can feel strengthened and less alone.
This month's Take a Stand, Make a Plan Action Hour will be Friday, 09/26/25, at 8:00pm Eastern. I know everyone's schedule is different, so I intend to offer different hours on different days each month so people in different timezones or who have different schedules can also participate.
Click this link to join the September Action Hour on 09/26/25 at 8:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Pacific. Please do NOT share this link with people who are not subscribed to the newsletter, although you are welcome to invite people to subscribe to get access for future sessions.
These meetings take place over Jitsi Meet, a video conferencing platform that is free to use, works on desktop and mobile browsers without the need for an app (although one is available), does not require a login for attendees, and does not collect or sell your data. You do not need to use your full name, camera, or microphone in these meetings if you do not wish to.
