Did You Know:
Yesterday marked the spring equinox here in the northern hemisphere, where many of us breathed a sigh of relief at the lengthening of daylight to come. The spring equinox is a special time of year for many cultures around the world, and still marks the new year in several traditional calendars.
For example, it's known as Nowruz in the Persian calendar and celebrated by a diverse array of peoples in Iran and across other countries throughout west Asia, central Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, south Asia, and of course diaspora communities of those peoples around the world as well as here. Vernal Equinox Day is a public holiday in Japan, where certain Japanese sects of Buddhism also observe it as the holiday Higan. The equinox is also the beginning of the Malagasy New Year (where, of course, it's the autumnal equinox).
In a confluence of calendars, this year the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr also began yesterday, a time of giving and family. And today, March 21st, is not only commemorated as the South African public holiday Human Rights Day, but has also been internationally known as the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination for 60 years.
While current events in the world this year bring a solemn gravity to what should be a period of renewal and celebration, we can still take this time to fortify our spirits and come together to grow and nurture ourselves, our families, and our communities.
From the blog archives: Reflecting on the mission of Discover Teas this birthday month
I've lost track over the years of how long Discover Teas has been open, and of how long I have been fortunate enough to be able to keep the fires going as this unique and very special business' owner, after its founder and original business owner Chris Farishon entrusted me to keep the mission going.
So it's with some surprise that I looked back this month and realized that this year marks the 15th anniversary of Discover Teas, and that as of this fall, I will have been continuing Chris' mission for 9 years. What is the mission, you might ask?
…the mission is to spread love through tea." —Discover Teas original founder Chris Farishon
I am, as always, eternally grateful to Chris for her trust, her mentorship and for leading by example in showing me what it looks like to make a difference through love, purpose, and gratitude.
And to all of you, whether we've known each other for years or just met recently, thank you so much for continuing to keep me company on this journey. May we continue to brew good in the world together for a long, long time.

Upcoming on Friday, March 27th: Opening of “Weaving Bulrush,” by Desmond Ellsworth of Blackwater Basketry, at the Elizabeth River Project in Norfolk
Raise a glass to celebrated Native basketry artist Desmond “A’siiMost Moskwaa” Ellsworth (he/him) of the Nansemond Indian Nation, who is unveiling a new work with living threads from native plants gathered along the Elizabeth River! March Action Hour: Tuesday, March 31st, 3:30pm Eastern!
This month's Action Hour will be on Tuesday, 03/31/26, at 3:30pm Eastern/2:30pm Central/1:30pm Mountain/12:30pm Pacific.
If you can make it, click this link to join the March Action Hour on 03/31/26 at 3:30pm Eastern. Please do NOT share this link with people who are not subscribed to the newsletter (although you can of course encourage them to sign up if you like!).
These meetings use Jitsi Meet, a video conferencing platform that is free to use, works on desktop and mobile browsers without the need for an app (although one is available), does not require attendees to log in, and does not collect or sell your data. You do not need to use your full name, camera, or microphone in these meetings unless you want to.
What's an Action Hour? Check out my blog post on the completely optional "Take a Stand, Make a Plan" incentive program to encourage protecting human rights and building stronger communities. By participating by either donating to an organization or joining an Action Hour, you can receive a $25 Discover Teas gift card code to use or to gift.
You're always welcome to join Action Hour, even if you don't have any specific plans for that time. It's a great space to brainstorm ideas, share resources, think about different groups we can reach out to, and come up with helpful scripts or schedules that can lessen the cognitive and emotional load of these tasks. It can also be an opportunity to discuss strategies for managing the deluge of dire news in a productive fashion while still staying informed and compassionate, ways to help keep each other safe, and how to identify or recover from burnout, so we can feel strengthened and less alone.
Can't make it? I know everyone's schedule is different, so Action Hour days and times vary each month so people in different timezones or who have different schedules can also participate.
"When isolation, trauma and despair are weaponized; building community, helping people heal, and bringing hope are acts of resistance."—A. Marshall
