August is Black Business Month, a great opportunity for everyone to continue supporting the Black-owned small businesses we already love, or to find new ones to try out either locally or online!
You can look up listings and spotlights for Black-owned businesses on your locality's tourism/hospitality pages or social media, or check out online directories for businesses that ship nationwide. If you're in the 757, you can try Buy Black Hampton Roads, which has some information for local Black history sites in the area in addition to its member directory. You can also go to Diverse Hampton Roads, which features Black-owned small businesses and microbusinesses alongside other minority, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and veteran-owned small businesses (and of course, businesses operated by people represented by any intersection of the above).
And by all means, we can always support Black-owned businesses all year round. When we show up for each other, we help keep our communities surviving and thriving!

August Action Hour: Thursday, August 21st, 2:30pm Eastern!
Since March, I've been hosting an Action Hour as part of the completely optional "Take a Stand, Make a Plan" incentive program, to encourage protecting human rights and building stronger communities. See the program information for how you can receive a $25 Discover Teas gift card code if you participate, even if you can't make it to this month's Action Hour.
You are always welcome to join the Action Hour, even if you don't have any specific actions planned during that time. It's a great space to brainstorm ideas, think about different groups we can reach out to, and come up with helpful scripts or schedules to use to lessen the cognitive and emotional load of these tasks. It can also be an opportunity to discuss strategies for managing the deluge of dire news in a productive fashion while still staying informed and compassionate, ways to help keep each other safe, and how to identify or recover from burnout.
This month's Take a Stand, Make a Plan Action Hour will be Thursday, 08/21/25, at 2:30pm Eastern. I know everyone's schedule is different, so I intend to offer different hours on different days each month so people in different timezones or who have different schedules can also participate.
