Invite to webinar on investigating land ownership

Hello,

Just a quick email to let you know that we're running a webinar on land and property data as part of the Data for Housing Justice project, and wanted to flag it to our network.

Who Owns What: Workshop session on land and property data
29th September, 17:00–18:30, Online

This workshop is a practical introduction to tools that can help housing organisers dig into who owns what.

In the first half of the session, we will introduce LandExplorer, our tool for uncovering land and property ownership across England and Wales. You'll learn how to set up an account, search for properties linked to specific companies, large landowners or local authorities, and trace patterns of ownership over time.

In the second half, Tom Sanderson from the Centre for Investigative Journalism will lead a session on what to do once you've got a company name. Companies rarely publish information about themselves voluntarily, but regulation means some of it becomes public whether they like it or not. Filings and accounts hold real detail about a company's health, its decisions, and who benefits from them, though the language is often dense and easy to skim past. Tom will walk through searching Companies House, reading a filing history, and picking out what's actually useful from the jargon.

Both sessions will work through real examples from companies in the housing sector, no previous experience needed.

Register here.

*This event will be recorded so that we can share the facilitator presentations on our website and social media. Participant contributions won't be included in the recording.

About the facilitators

Data for Housing Justice is a collaboration between Shared Assets and Digital Commons Cooperative, working to understand data needs in housing movements and turn that knowledge into practical tools and strategies for organising.

Digital Commons Cooperative works alongside social movements to build digital tools for radical change. LandExplorer is one of their tools, helping communities, campaigners, and cooperatives understand who owns land, plan projects, and build campaigns.

Tom Sanderson is Deputy Director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism, where he leads the organisation's training provision and oversees the development of new curricula and funded projects. His recent work includes supporting community and non-profit journalism, helping journalists protect their sources, and improving standards in climate and environmental investigations internationally. He regularly delivers tailored investigative training for research teams at newsrooms and civil society organisations worldwide.

Hope to see some of you there.

Best,

The DCC team
