Musings and Meanderings
I was surprised to receive an email to renew my passport from the US State Department reminding me that I had less than a year left and that most countries require at least 6 months left to let you visit. Moused over the links to make they were from and going to a legitimate govt website. I was able to renew my passport online and pausing in filling my application as needed. This was pretty handy as I uploaded many, many pictures but the background wasn't white enough, too many shadows, head was at an odd angle, looking tired and hangry, etc. I looked around for someone to take a picture that I could then upload but found photoaid.com instead. I was able to upload a picture Bill had taken and they were able to remove the shadows and tweak the color of the background and I remained looking the same. The online renewal process was finally happy with my picture! So glad I got this done before the government shutdown on Oct 1st, 2025. I sent in my application on Sep 22nd, they received it Sep 23rd and I got my new passport on Sep 27th. What?!? I was frankly astounded and happy that I got my passport in my hot little hands (yes, I do run warmer than usual) with the new passport looking and feeling quite a bit different.
The repairs are finally completed! Four (4) days after sending out the last newsletter bemoaning my sad state of house repairs, the renovations were completed and furniture moved back in on Sep 29th. All items from my kitchen cabinets & decorative chests that held anything that could be packed into moving boxes were brought back into the area between the living and dining room creating a mountain taller than me (which, honestly, is not all that difficult - LOL!). We had too much fun trying to re-assemble my Japanese kaidan tansu (stair chest) - similar to this one but mine is not an antique, the "stairs" go up right to left and has 3 parts to it so you could re-arrange it to make it look less stair-like. Unpacked for 3 days with the last little bits taking a lot more time as I tried putting away things in a more organized fashion. Lots of things got thrown out or donated and we have broken down more boxes and collected more bubble wrap (had 3 boxes and 2 garbage bags full) and moving blankets that week than in the last 25 years. Yikes! Luckily I mentioned my bubble wrap and moving blanket dilemma in passing and found someone who was glad to take them off my hands. We did keep a few moving blankets - just in case - and lined the floors of our car trunks with them.
So the week before and after the renovations were completed I began receiving requests about my newsletter and me from: (1) my newsletter platform, Buttondown, asked for why I use buttondown and how - here is the link and will eventually appear in the customer testimonials page which may be on the website's stories next month - the picture is of me very happy and content on a giant bean bag; (2) NORBAG (North Redwood Book Arts Guild) - requested a member bio for their November newsletter - you have to be a member to see that newsletter but I will copy the information to a Google Doc and share that instead - one wonders which picture they will use - happy picture of me lounging in a giant bean bag or holding Luca, my favorite void of a black cat I cat-sit in Hawai'i whom I see in every shadow for a week after house-sitting; (3) Jane Carlin of Puget Sound Book Artist (PSBA) wanted to reference the newsletter for their book arts resources page so a quick little write up was sent off to her - woo hoo!
Yolanda A. joined me to take in the The California Effect exhibit at the Long Beach Museum of Art. BTW - parking is always FREE and admission is half off on Fridays! I loved that we knew or knew of so many people who had pieces in that exhibit, Alicia Bailey, Karen Hanmer, Rebecca Chamlee, Insiya Dhatt, Jodee Fenton, Brian Lieske, Elaine Nishizu, to name a few. There were many "how did they do that", "what an ingenious binding", "cool use of unusual materials for their covers", oohs & aahs, gasps and sighs! We also had a chance to check out Voice of the Artist: Artist Books from their permanent collection and was astounded by Genie Shenk's Ring and delighted by Dr. Paul Johnson's colorful paper sculpture, The House That Climbed a Tree. The room overlooked the Long Beach harbor and the 4 oil pumping stations disguised as artificial islands and named for astronauts. The view was mesmerizing as there were clouds in the sky due to being on the edge of a storm from the south and the light, oh, the light. Then it was lunch at the museum cafe with entirely too many delectable choices. Gosh! Looking at works of art in the artists book world can work up an appetite. I took way too many pictures and they had a video running showing a lot more of the books. If you are in the area, I highly recommend you check out this exhibit. It will be going until Mar 8, 2026. If you make a weekend of visiting Long Beach try some of the suggestions listed in the previous link but skip the expensive hotels and try to find an AirBnB or VRBO in one neighborhood close to a coffee or breakfast place. Here are some places to eat - I have not tried any of them but I will definitely be checking them out in the future. We left inspired and brimming with ideas. Well, Yolanda was brimming with ideas. I, on the other hand, was inspired to figure out how to get in touch with one of the artist to see if she had an edition of the artist book she had on display for sale.
Two days before our museum adventure, I happily attended the first session of Susan Share & Paula Krieg's ZXB (Zhen Xian Bao) 2025 Reimagined or for those of us that have been with them since March 2025 - Series 3. I'll have you know that my folding muscle memory was in a sad state and was absolutely glad for the refreshers that happened especially for the twist boxes (flat and dimensional) which were than corralled by two strips of paper that eventually wrapped 3 structure in a box - ingenious! We continued playing with the heights of the twist boxes and changing the edges of the tops. We were also able to make a quick ZXB with an accordion book with a cover, 2 rectangular trays, and the large box. Paula and Susan proved to us that ZXBs can be made quickly with some small departures from the traditional form and with loads of fun. Don't even get me started on how delighted I was with the sewing repair kit held together with a bamboo skewer. I had been collecting these coffee stirrers, shaped like oars, and coffee lid stoppers, wondering what I was going to do with them and now they HAVE purpose! I even figured out how to use the short coffee lid stoppers coming in about 2" (a little over 5cm).
We were unable to house- and cat-sit for our house sittee in early September as we were in the midst of the waiting, measuring, renovating thingy. I thought about sending one of us over there but we really needed both of us here to tracking everything that was not going on and to interpret insurance speak. To celebrate completion of the renovations and needing to get away, I planned a trip for a visit to O'ahu, to talk story with hanai ohana and visit with friends (having lunch and visiting the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Art-o-Matic there), and spending the majority of the trip on the Big Island where it is quiet, laid back and where I should be able to see the dark skies ablaze with the Milky Way, stars, maybe a few meteors, a comet; a whale or two, some turtles, white, black & green sand beaches; and, if I am lucky, a fountaining eruption at Volcano National Park, with thanks to the auspices of Madame Pele.
Earlier this year in April I dropped in on Margo Klass's workshop at NPBAF (Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival) to say hello as it had been entirely too long since I last saw her. She asked that I talk about my newsletter and in the informal Q&A session that followed someone asked if I had a sponsor for my newsletter. I said I did not, that it was all self-sponsored, but did mention that I was thinking about putting in a button or link to "buy me a coffee" but that was going to he sometime in the future. Six months later and I took a look into it while waiting for the house repairs to get done. It was free but they take a small percentage of the coffee fund. So for those of you that asked for the link it is live and available in the newsletter. The first person to let me know where they found it will receive a bamboo and aluminum desk set (fountain pen, ballpoint pen and an Arc desk organizer [to hold your pens]). Happy hunting!
See you in November!
