Episode 81: 1969 with Willow Catelyn Maclay
A podcast about the great movie years.
Corpses, Fools and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema (out Tuesday) is one of our favorite film books of the year, and we’re welcoming both of its authors as consecutive guests. This week, film critic Willow Catelyn Maclay joins us to talk about the movies of 1969, from the ahead-of-its-time freedom of Funeral Parade of Roses to the Gotham grime of Midnight Cowboy to the delightful silliness of Gamera vs Guiron.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Google Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Funeral Parade of Roses is streaming on Kanopy and Night Flight Plus. Midnight Cowboy is on the Criterion Channel (as part of an excellent program of films set in Times Square), as well as Tubi, PlutoTV, MGM+, and various other digital rental or purchase platforms, but we recommend picking up Criterion’s Blu-ray - currently on deep discount via Barnes & Noble’s Criterion sale and Amazon’s price match. And if you’re interested in Times Square cinema, check out our Fun City Cinema episode on the subject.
Play Dirty isn’t streaming anywhere, but you can pick it up on Blu-ray here. Le Grand Amour is streaming on the Criterion Channel. And Gamera vs Guiron is on Amazon Prime, Tubi, Arrow Player, and several other ad-based (and rental or purchase) platforms, but we’d recommend picking up that Arrow box set we mentioned.
