Episode 62: 1989 with Jacob Knight
A podcast about the great movie years.
This week: Back at SXSW, we’re joined by Austin’s own Jacob Knight, co-host of the “Secret Handshake” podcast, and lover of great movies and great trash. 1989 offered plenty of both, from the power of The Abyss to the inanity of Jason Takes Manhattan to the coke-dusted earnestness of Road House.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Google Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
The Abyss is streaming on Hulu and Paramount+, and available for digital rental or purchase, as well as newly on 4K UHD Blu-ray. The Killer isn’t streaming, which is unreal, and it looks like your only legal way to purchase it is this DVD.
Road House is streaming on Prime Video and Max, and also got a nice 4K recently from Vinegar Syndrome. (Also, here’s Jason’s review of the tepid remake that premiered at SXSW the day after we recorded this episode.) Miracle Mile is on Tubi and PlutoTV, and here’s that Arrow Blu-ray Jason mentioned.
And Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is streaming on Max, is available for digital rental or purchase, and is included in Shout Factory’s excellent F13 box set.
