Episode 51: 1935 with Leonard Martin
A podcast about the great movie years.
When Jessie Maltin — Leonard’s daughter and the co-host of his “Maltin on Movies” podcast — mentioned to me in a DM that “you should have my dad on your show,” I just about fainted. Like any child of the ‘80s, Leonard Maltin was an idol, one of the first people I ever identified with the job of film critic, thanks to his appearances as such on Entertainment Tonight and the ubiquity of his annual Movie Guide on the shelves of Waldenbooks and B. Dalton. I get into my specific personal connection with him at the end of the show, but when you hear it, you’ll understand why I knew right away that I wanted him to be our last guest of the season.
Ruggles of Red Gap is available for digital rental or purchase. A Night at the Opera is currently streaming on the Watch TCM app and is available for digital rental or purchase; it also has a very good Warner Archive Blu-ray.
Top Hat is available for digital rental or purchase. The 39 Steps is streaming all over the place: HBOMax, the Criterion Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV, Shout Factory TV, and many more.
And The Bride of Frankenstein is on Peacock (but only until the end of the month, so act fast!), and Watch TCM, as well as the usual digital outlets. But you should reeeeallllly buy its recent 4K release (either stand-alone or in the second Universal Classic Monsters collection).
As for Mike and I: Happiness is on Kanopy and YouTube, and Man on the Flying Trapeze isn’t streaming, but you should pick up the very good KL Studio Classic Blu-ray.
