Episode 49: 1990 with Joe Lynch
A podcast about the great movie years.
Joe Lynch is a genre director extraordinaire - his credits include Wrong Turn 2, Everly, Mayhem, Point Blank, and his latest, the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Suitable Flesh, out in theaters and on VOD October 27):
Joe was in his early teens in 1990, and for reasons we’ll discuss, saw pretty much anything and everything in this year that proved key to his development as a filmmaker and movie lover.
Nightbreed is currently streaming on Prime Video, Peacock, and a bunch of the ad-supported streamers. But if you like this one, do yourself the favor of picking up the new Scream Factory 4K Blu-ray. They also put out an awfully good Blu-ray of Darkman, which is also available for digital rental or purchase.
King of New York is currently available on several of the ad-supported streamers, or you can pick up that Arrow 4K that Joe mentioned. Misery is only available for digital purchase, so if you’re gonna do that, you may as well pick up KL Studio Classics’ recent 4K Blu-ray. And as we mention, Short Time is basically unstreamable, but here’s a YouTube rip of it (watch it while it lasts!):
As for Mike and Jason: Paris is Burning is currently on HBOMax and the Criterion Channel (and has a very good Criterion Blu-ray), while Quick Change is on Tubi, Kanopy, and the usual digital rental/purchase platforms. (There’s also a bare-bones-but-still-worth-having Warner Archive Blu-ray.)
As always, if you’d like to log and review these yourself, head on over to our list page on Letterboxd.
