Episode 35: 1988 with Daniela Taplin Lundberg
A podcast about the great movie years.
Daniela Taplin Lundberg was born into film production - her father Jonathan produced the first major movie for a promising young filmmaker named Martin Scorsese - and her producing credits include The Kids Are All Right, Honey Boy, Harriet, and Together Together. Now she hosts the essential podcast Hollywood Gold, where she welcomes other producers to tell their war stories about iconic movies. On the episode, we make particular note of the Apocalypse Now and Bull Durham episodes, if you’d like to start there.
Like us, Daniela was in the 12-13 range in 1988, so most of these are movies she saw by herself, of her own choosing, at that key age where your cinematic taste buds are forming. Her top five are all films we remember seeing at that age as well, but if you’re looking to watch them for the first time (or would like to revisit them in light of our discussion), here’s how:
Big is currently streaming on Disney+ and Tubi, or available for digital rental or purchase via the usual vendors. Here’s Jason’s essay on the film for Vulture, published back in 2018 for its 30th anniversary.
He also wrote this piece for Vulture, which we mentioned, that same year for Coming to America. It’s available for digital rental or purchase.
Working Girl is also available for digital rental or purchase. And, well, since we mentioned it, they’re all discussed in Jason’s book Fun City Cinema: New York City and the Movies That Made It.
Hey, look at that, Mystic Pizza is streaming on Max. You can also rent or buy it via the usual suspects; same goes for Stand and Deliver.
As always, if you’d like to log and review these yourself, head on over to our list page on Letterboxd.
And if you somehow haven’t yet subscribed to MUBI, click on over to mubi.com/averygoodyear and you can get a 30-day free membership to try out their curated streaming service. Our recommendations for MUBI movies this week were Damnation and Tetsuo, the Iron Man.
Oh, and hey, have you upgraded to a paid subscription yet? You can do that right here, and here’s Mike and I telling you what it’ll get you (spoiler: bonus episodes, bonus posts, and our undying love).
