Episode 31: 2004 with Hunter Harris
A podcast about the great movie years.
Pop culture expert, Substacker extraordinaire, and fellow flyover country escapee Hunter Harris joins Jason and Mike to talk about the Year of our Lord 2004, in which Marty and Leo re-teamed, Julia Roberts said some really dirty words, and Tom Cruise chastised Jamie Foxx for being a bad son. We were disgruntled mid-20s dudes in 2004; Hunter was ten. TEN! Barely double-digits! It’s fine.
The Aviator is currently steaming on Amazon Prime and Hoopla, or you can rent or buy it digitally. Here’s Jason on The Color of Money, which we mention in passing, and here are not one but two of Hunter’s pieces about Martin Scorsese’s glasses.
Birth is available for digital rental or purchase- BUT, if you live in New York City, you can also go see it on 35mm this Monday and Thursday at the Metrograph. Tickets here! Paid subscribers, here’s Jason’s “First Thoughts” post on this one.
Collateral is streaming on Hoopla and PlutoTV, and available for digital rental or purchase, but it’s also really worth grabbing the 4K Blu-ray. And here is Hunter’s post about it and the “carried you in her womb” line.
Closer is streaming on Netflix, yay! And you can buy or rent it too.
Before Sunset is also available for digital rental or purchase, but just go ahead and buy the Criterion box set of the trilogy.
You should follow Hunter Harris on Twitter and Instagram, and, as we mention many times, you should definitely subscribe to “Hung Up.” As always, if you’d like to log and review these yourself, head on over to our list page on Letterboxd.
And if you somehow haven’t yet subscribed to MUBI, click on over to mubi.com/averygoodyear and you can get a 30-day free membership to try out their curated streaming service. Our recommendations for MUBI movies this week were The Five Obstructions and Los Angeles Plays Itself.
Oh, and hey, have you upgraded to a paid subscription yet? You can do that right here, and here’s Mike and I telling you what it’ll get you (spoiler: bonus episodes, bonus posts, and our undying love).
