Welcome back to 5 Minute Midterms! Last week you checked your voter registration and re-registered, if needed. (You did check, right?) Now it’s time to dive deeper, so let’s get started on Week 2.

Know your voting options

Have you thought about whether you’ll vote in-person or by mail this election? How about voting early vs. on Election Day?

Not sure? That’s understandable. Things have been feeling kind of up in the air lately. But the important thing right now is that you know all your options so nothing catches you off guard in November.

So, how does voting actually work where you live?

It varies from state to state, but we’re here to help you get familiar with the options. We want you to have all the information you need to be prepared—for anything and everything.

Early Voting

• Does your state offer early in-person voting?

• If so, what are the dates? Is there weekend voting?

Same-Day Registration

• If something goes sideways with your registration, can you fix it during early voting or on Election Day?

Absentee/Mail Voting

• Does your state offer “no-excuse” absentee voting?

• How do you request a ballot?

• What’s the deadline to request a ballot?

Returning a Ballot

• When does your ballot need to be returned by?

• Are there drop boxes or do you need to send it through USPS?

Thinking about these questions and gathering info now means less scrambling when it comes time to cast your ballot. And remember, things can change quickly, so always check with your local election commission for the most up-to-date information.

Week 2 TL;DR

Find out when you can vote in-person and how you can vote by mail. Note the deadlines for requesting and returning an absentee ballot and mark your calendars!
