31 Days of Halloween: October 2

Hello ghosties!

Thank you so much for all of your support and kind words welcoming the return of the newsletter. Writing this every year has become a beloved tradition for me, so it really means a lot to hear that y’all enjoy it and look forward to it, too.

This year, I’m trying to gear up gradually into spooky mode—we’re bringing out one Halloween item a day so that it’s a slower, month-long transformation instead of trying to do it all at once and getting overwhelmed. (I have a lot of decorations, okay?)

That said… it’s definitely time to start on the creepy movies, Halloween episodes of TV shows and spooky tunes.

Do you have a favorite seasonal movie or TV show episode that kicks it all off for you? (I have many favorites, but if I had to pick one mood-setter, it’d have to be Over the Garden Wall.)

On Instagram, Geo Rutherford (@geodesaurus) is doing 31 days of “haunted hydrology”, telling stories about a different spooky lake each day of the month.

A screencap showing a woman superimposed over a mountain. It's labeled

Day 1 is Roopkund Lake in the Himalayas, and it is actually rather spooky—just as promised! (There’s also a whole book on the topic.)

A three panel comic titled "jump scare". The first two panels are blank and in the third a ghost leans into the frame and says a tiny "Boo"

I pre-ordered “Grave Offerings”, a cool risoprint zine of art and essays about horror films.

A hand holding a zine, "Billy & Stu would like to talk to you about horror by Tom Humberstone", featuring art of Billy and Stu from Scream

It’s by Edinburgh-based artist Tom Humberstone and will be released on October 8, so I will be excitedly checking the mail this month!

👻

What are you putting on early in October to help you start feeling the Halloween spirit? Or, if you wait a little longer—when does it begin for you? Hit reply and let me know.

Enjoying the boo-tiful day,

Laura
